Women’s track & field begins outdoor season at John-Hunter Classic

COLUMBIA, S.C.— Just one week after its indoor season came to a close, the Montreat women's track & field team opened its 2025 outdoor slate with the John-Hunter Classic, hosted by Columbia International University, in Columbia, S.C. Competing on Friday and Saturday, the Cavaliers' 29 entries racked up nine top-five placements and one time that matched a school record. As a result, the Cavs scored 71 points, fifth-most out of 13 scoring teams.

Montreat notched top-five efforts in a pair of field events on Friday. Emma Barnes concluded runner-up out of 18 participants in the javelin thanks to her 35.96m mark. Meanwhile, Isis Rain Giron ended third among a field of 15 competitors in the hammer throw. The Greensboro, N.C. native achieved a personal best with a performance of 34.48m.

While she finished just outside the top five, Adrianna Gullette matched a program record on Saturday in the 100m prelims. The senior from Winston-Salem, N.C. sprinted her way to a 12.49-second time, equaling Sanyia Miller's top race from last year.

Nevaeh Pereira won her flight in the shot put, but Giron's personal best paced all Montreat athletes in the event. The junior hurled her implement 10.58m to conclude the competition as runner-up out of 15.

Lydia Norman accumulated a pair of top-five showings in the triple jump and long jump. In the former, Norman placed second of four with a top effort of 10.34m. Meanwhile, during the latter, Norman utilized a personal-best mark (5.08m) to end fourth. Gullette led the Cavs in the long jump with her third-place leap of 5.16m.

After ending inside the top five in a field event on Friday, Barnes did the same on the track during Saturday's action. Barnes wrapped up her 100m hurdles prelims race in 15.54 seconds, good for third. The junior then finished fourth in the finals with a time of 15.72 seconds.

Two other Cavaliers bagged top-five performances over the weekend. Carlyn Bobo (fifth; 5:09.41) made her outdoor 1500m debut, and Natalia Nieto (fifth; 2:28.73) ran in the 800m event.
