GEORGETOWN, Ky.— Montreat's women's lacrosse team went on the road to face the (RV) Georgetown College Tigers on Saturday. The game was the first of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) schedule for both squads. The Tigers pounced on the Cavs (0-6, 0-1 AAC) and triumphed in the conference battle, 22-2.
The Tigers (3-4, 1-0 AAC) scored the opening two goals in the contest; however,
Grace Wiegand cut the hosts' lead in half when she scored a goal assisted by
Marley Smith. The home team scored three more times in the frame to lead the Cavaliers, 5-1, after the first quarter.
The Tigers continued to flex their offensive muscles in the second frame as Georgetown scored eight goals and had 15 shots on frame in the quarter. Montreat goalkeeper
Tayah Quinn tallied seven saves in the quarter, the most from both goalies in any period. The Cavs managed just one shot in the period and trailed at the half, 13-1.
After the break, the Tigers locked down the Cavs' offense again, allowing just one additional shot in the third period. Georgetown scored six more goals in the frame, and Quinn added two more saves.
In the concluding frame, the Tigers added to their advantage, putting three past Quinn. Despite the large scoring effort, Montreat notched the last goal of the game to round out the day. Wiegand netted an unassisted goal, bringing her total to 18 goals on the year. That strike also finished the scoring as GC won, 22-2.
Individually, Smith had the most draw controls with four, Wiegand notched three and
Ruthann Stout corralled two. The Cavaliers were awarded one free position attempt. It went to
Abby Callies, but she could not convert the chance.
Anna White and
Breianna Boyd registered the only caused turnovers for the visitors.
As a team, Montreat tallied 10 shots with seven of them being on goal. The Cavaliers turned possession over 23 times while Georgetown did so nine times. Montreat went 5-for-6 on clears in the game, and four of them occurred in the first quarter. Georgetown converted all their clear attempts in the contest. Montreat was doubled up in ground balls, 22-11, and had fewer draw controls than the Tigers (16-11).
The Cavaliers will host the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy Eutectics in their next competition on March 17. The opening draw control is slated for 5 p.m. at Pulliam Stadium.
