Wiegand nets four goals in Cavalier loss

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— Montreat's women's lacrosse team hosted its second home game of the 2025 campaign when it faced the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis Eutectics Monday evening. The Cavaliers (0-7) lost the contest by a scoreline of 16-6.
 
The Eutectics (2-4) scored four goals in the opening quarter, jumping out to an early lead. The Cavs had four shots in the frame, with two landing on target. Before the half ended, Montreat scored twice in the second period. Ruthann Stout scored her fourth goal of the year to slash the shutout. Just a minute later, Grace Wiegand scored a goal while the visitors had a player in the penalty box. Wiegand's goal was her 19th of the season. Both Montreat tallies were unassisted. Going into halftime, the Cavaliers trailed, 7-2.
 
After the break, UHSP scored three unanswered goals to lead the Cavs ,10-2. Montreat scored four goals in the quarter itself. Wiegand completed her hat trick in the third quarter with two strikes. She also registered an assist in the frame when Marley Smith scored her 14th goal of the season. Adding to the hat trick, Wiegand scored her fourth in the game with under six minutes to play in the third quarter; however, the Eutectics scored the lone goal in the fourth quarter and cruised to a 16-6 win.
 
Wiegand led the Cavs with four goals and the only assist for Montreat. Stout and Smith each followed with one goal apiece. Wiegand and Stout led the Cavs with 10 and nine shots, respectively. Tayah Quinn had 10 saves and the most ground balls for Montreat with six. Stout collected three, while Wiegand and Ailani Soto each secured two ground balls. Three Montreat players notched a caused turnover. Anna White, Quinn and Stout had the defensive statistics. Smith had the most draw controls with five, and Wiegand followed with four.
 
Montreat had 21 shots with 13 on goal in the 60-minute battle. The Cavaliers had more saves (10-7) and turnovers (40-29) than their opponent. They also had fewer ground balls (36-16) and draw controls (13-12) than UHSP. Montreat converted more free-position attempts than the Eutectics (2-1). The Cavs only received two cards while UHSP had nine.
 
The Cavaliers will get the weekend off and play their next game against the No. 6-ranked Reinhardt University Eagles in Waleska, Ga. on March 26. The Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) battle is slated to start at 4 p.m.
