RALEIGH, N.C.— Montreat's women's track & field team divided and conquered when it came to this weekend's competitions. The Cavaliers sent athletes to two different meets, the first being the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State University, and the second being the Gotta Run Invite, hosted by Southern Wesleyan University.
At the Raleigh Relays,
Dylan Garcia and
Heather Murphy shined as they set new school records in their respective events. Murphy lit up the track in the 10k and finished second overall out of 71 total finishers. Her time of 33:45.36 shattered the old record by over three minutes. She earned an NAIA 'A' standard with the time. The Portarlington, Ireland native also took hold of the event's top time in all the NAIA.
Garcia flew in the 1500m and clocked a time of 4:29.17. She beat the previous record by over 10 seconds. Garcia's 105
th-place effort was fast enough for an NAIA 'B' standard, and she was just 0.17 seconds from an 'A' standard. Her time currently ranks third in the nation.
The other Montreat athletes competing over the weekend did so at the Gotta Run Invite. The Cavs submitted 26 entries across nine events. The Cavaliers came away with one event win and six personal bests in their showing.
Jessica Gakeri won the long jump with a 5.53m effort, while
Lydia Norman ended seventh (5.25m). In the 100m hurdles,
Emma Barnes finished in fifth place with a time of 15.32 seconds. She also set a new personal best with the effort.
In the same distance without the hurdles, two Cavaliers finished in the top 10.
Adrianna Gullette placed sixth, clocking in an effort of 12.63 seconds. Norman finished ninth in the event with a new personal best time of 12.97 seconds. Norman also placed well in the triple jump. She leaped for a mark of 10.30m, good enough for seventh place in the competition.
In the javelin, three Cavs placed within the top 10.
Isis Rain Giron threw for a mark of 27.73m, leading the Cavaliers with a sixth-place effort. Behind her,
Elizabeth Harrington and
Stephanie Hinojos finished consecutively for eighth and ninth. In Harrington's event debut, she achieved a throw of 25.72m, and Hinojos' effort went for a distance of 21.57m.
Harrington was the lone Montreat competitor in the high jump. She finished eighth with a mark of 1.45m. Her leap was just 0.03m off the school record.
The 200m event also saw Montreat runners in the top 10. Barnes clocked in at eighth with a time of 25.99 seconds, and
Saniya Miller finished with a personal best time of 26.06 seconds. Miller's time was good enough for tenth in the event.
The lone Montreat athlete to place in the top 10 in the shot put was Giron. She finished tenth with a mark of 9.97m in the event.
