Women’s track & field racks up wins, records at home meet

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— The Montreat women's track & field team hosted its annual outdoor meet, the Montreat College Open, on Friday and Saturday at Pulliam Stadium in Black Mountain, N.C. Capitalizing on their familiar surroundings, the Cavaliers' 53 entries racked up eight wins, three school records and a national standard across 19 events.

All three of Montreat's school records occurred during Saturday's action. Stephanie Hinojos broke the program's top hammer throw mark with a 36.93m effort. The Clemmons, N.C. native ended third of 18 participants in the event.

Kaylene Manternach set a new 400m school record with her career-best time of 59.20 seconds. The multi-sport athlete ended second of 11 runners.

The Cavs' third and final school record from the meet also secured a first-place finish. Yessenia Castellanos, Dylan Garcia, Manternach and Emily Standifer teamed up for a 4:00.76 time in the 4x400m relay, beating out two other squads en route to the program's new top performance.

Montreat's lone standard of the weekend featured a victory as well. In a field of four jumpers, Jessica Gakeri had no trouble winning the triple jump. Gakeri's best effort proved to be 12.07m, surpassing the NAIA 'A' standard by 0.06m and falling just 0.05m shy of matching her own school record. Gakeri also won the long jump at the Montreat College Open, topping 14 other competitors with her 5.46m showing.

Brooke Wiebe, Castellanos, Heather Murphy and Garcia nearly met the NAIA 'B' standard in the 4x800m relay. The group won the event over five other relays, and their 9:29.66 time missed the national mark by just 0.84 seconds.

Montreat secured the clean sweep across all four relays on Saturday. In the 4x100m event, Saniya Miller, Lydia Norman, Adrianna Gullette and Gakeri landed less than a second shy of setting a school record while winning the race in 50.63 seconds. Meanwhile, in the program's first ever mixed 4x400m relay, Senor Glenn, Gullette, Mark Blalock and Emma Barnes topped the three-team field with a time of 3:47.77.

Two other Cavaliers came away from the weekend with triumphs. Elizabeth Harrington's 1.46m effort proved good enough to win against a seven-athlete high jump field. Wiebe beat her only other competitor in the 3000m steeplechase with an 11:50.18 time.

The Montreat women's track & field team also had the chance to honor 11 seniors during the weekend. Six of those seniors were involved in winning an event, setting a school record or meeting a national standard at Pulliam Stadium.
