Women’s lacrosse shut out by No. 6 Reinhardt

WALESKA, Ga.— The Montreat women's lacrosse team hit the road on Wednesday for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) showdown versus the No. 6-ranked Reinhardt University Eagles. Unable to keep up with the nationally-regarded hosts, the Cavaliers dropped a 28-0 final and fell to 0-8 (0-2 AAC) on the year.

Reinhardt (7-4, 3-0 AAC) scored all eight goals during the initial quarter of action. The Eagles jumped in front by three less than two minutes into the period, and they maintained an 8-0 advantage by the frame's conclusion. Tayah Quinn made six saves in the quarter, while Grace Wiegand and Marley Smith each notched a shot on goal.

The hosts controlled the following 15-minute stretch as well, registering seven additional tallies while holding Montreat scoreless. The Cavs didn't place a shot on goal during the second quarter, and Quinn recorded two more saves in net. Ultimately, RU entered the intermission with a 15-0 lead.

Picking up where they left off, the Eagles once again proved responsible for all the offensive production in the third period. Reinhardt scored six times during the quarter, and it stopped the visitors' lone attempt on frame. Quinn prevented two scoring opportunities, but the home side still expanded its edge to 21-0 by the end of the third.

Wiegand placed a shot on target for the second straight quarter, but RU's goalkeeper stopped the attempt on a short hop to preserve the shutout. Meanwhile, the home team added seven more goals to its total. When the final buzzer sounded, the Eagles secured a 28-0 victory.

Reinhardt ended the game with more shots (53-6), shots on goal (40-4), draw controls (24-6), clears (16-3), ground balls (19-5) and caused turnovers (17-6) than its counterpart. The Eagles also committed nine fewer miscues (17-8).

Wiegand paced the visitors with four shots, three of which were on target. Smith also had a shot on frame, while Anna White's attempt missed high. Wiegand and Quinn picked up two ground balls, and Wiegand led the way with three caused turnovers. Smith had a team-high three draw controls. Quinn totaled 12 saves across the 60-minute affair.

Montreat has another AAC matchup lined up for this Saturday against Tennessee Wesleyan University. Opening draw control is slated for 1 p.m. at Pulliam Stadium in Black Mountain, N.C.
