OWENSBORO, Ky.— Montreat's baseball team traveled to face the Brescia University Bearcats in a three-game series starting on Thursday. In a nine-inning affair, the Bearcats came back to beat the Cavaliers by a score of 10-8. With the defeat, the Cavs' record fell to 12-14.
To start the day, Montreat (12-14) brought its first four batters around the diamond without getting out. The quick start came from a
Blake Watts RBI double that brought the leadoff man in
Dawson Bryant home to score. With two runners on base,
Tommy Ramos came up to bat and tattooed a baseball over the fence in center to extend the advantage.
In the next frame, the Cavs tallied another four runs from the same bats as the first inning. Watts brought in
Kaden Ethier this time to score from an RBI single. Right after that, Ramos slammed another ball over the barrier, this time in left field. Back-to-back three-run bombs from Ramos gave the Cavs a lead over the Bearcats, 8-1, after two frames.
Merritt Evans started on the mound for Montreat and hurled five full innings. Evans surrendered four hits and two runs in his time on the bump. He notched four strikeouts and walked just one batter in his appearance.
Montreat scored all its runs in those first two innings. They left 14 runners on base and were shut out to finish the game. The Bearcats (10-7) mounted a comeback and scored nine runs in five innings to take the lead, 10-8. Montreat had three errors, all of which were in the final three innings. In the top of the ninth, the Cavaliers flew out and struck out twice to end the game.
Ramos and Watts registered three hits in the contest. Ramos tallied six RBIs and Watts had two.
Hunter Furches and Ethier stole the only two bases for the Cavs.
The Cavaliers outhit the Bearcats, 13-10, in the loss. The hits came from 40 at-bats, and six of them were for extra bases. Montreat walked five times, and three Cav batters were hit by a pitch. The Cavaliers struck out nine times in the ball game.
Up next, the Cavs will face the Bearcats for a duo of seven-inning contests starting at noon on Friday to round out the series.
