Montreat swept in Kentucky series

OWENSBORO, Ky.— Montreat's baseball team continued the series against the Brescia University Bearcats on Friday. After dropping the game on Thursday, the Cavaliers lost both seven-frame games by scores of 9-8 and 10-7.

After giving up an opening run in the first, the Cavs (12-16) took the lead in the third courtesy of a Manny Moore two-run double. The knock brought in Hunter Furches and Tommy Ramos. Moore came around to score from a wild pitch later in the inning, giving Montreat a 3-1 lead after three.

Montreat added to the advantage in the fourth. With a runner on, Furches slammed a home run to left field. The bomb scored Connor Goff. To answer, Brescia (12-7) plated three runs in the bottom half. Both teams scored in the fifth and sixth innings as well. Montreat had three sacrifice flies during the stretch, seizing an 8-6 lead in the process.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bearcats added two runs to tie the score at eight apiece. Montreat could not get any runs in the final inning. The hosts walked off the initial game after a hit into center field with a runner at second. Montreat lost it 9-8.

Logan Strickland got the nod at the bump in the first game and hurled for four innings. He surrendered six hits and four runs. He walked two batters and struck out three in his start. Trevor Laughlin got the loss after giving up the walk-off hit. He struck out a batter before Brescia won the game.

The concluding game of the series started with the hosts getting on the board first. The Bearcats scored three runs in the bottom of the second. A Dawson Bryant sac fly in the top of the third cut the lead to just two runs. The Bearcats then put a crooked number on the board when they scored six runs in the bottom of the frame.

Montreat scored six runs across the subsequent three frames to answer. Moore doubled to left field in the fourth ushering Ramos to score. In the fifth, Daniel Wagner sprinted home on a wild pitch, and Ramos singled to left. Justin Austin was able to trot home on the hit from Ramos. Moore continued the runs for Montreat when he drilled a bomb over the fence in left to score two runs.

The lone run scored in the sixth came from a Devon Smith single to center field. Goff made it home on the play. The effort was not enough as the Bearcats held on to win the seven-inning game 10-7.

The Cavaliers used five arms in the concluding game. Ashe Ammerlaan got the start and moved to 3-3 with the loss. Donovan Parker, Myles Draughn, Braden Holliday and Hunter Rast all threw pitches in the game. The bullpen crew struck out four batters while walking three and hitting two. They gave up four hits and just one run as well.

Individually, Moore led the Cavs with four hits, two in each contest. All four of his hits went for extra bases, tallying three doubles and a home run. Ramos had three hits, all in the second game. Moore tallied five RBIs in the game, leading the squad.

As a team, Montreat went 18-for-54 combined from the plate in both games. 10 hits went for extra bases in the twin bill. Montreat walked nine times and struck out eight times.

Montreat will try to get back to winning ways when it plays a solo contest against the Bob Jones University Bruins on Tuesday in Greenville, S.C. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
