MOCKSVILLE, N.C.— Montreat's baseball team made a day trip to play the Penn State University-Scranton Nittany Lions in a neutral-site game on Monday. The Cavaliers blitzed PSU-Scranton (4-6) as they swung for 24 hits. Montreat won in blowout fashion in the afternoon contest by a score of 19-2 in a run-rule-shortened seven innings.
Montreat (12-13) got on the board immediately in the first.
Tommy Ramos ripped the cover off the baseball with a solo nuke to left field. Then, in the second, the Cavs added four more runs to their advantage.
Kaden Ethier doubled to left, which brought home
Connor Goff, and
Dawson Bryant singled to left center, ushering Ethier home to score. The Cavs also scored on a play featuring two Nittany Lion errors.
Montreat scored at least a run in each of the first three innings. In the third, Bryant singled through the left side with the bases juiced to score both
Hunter Furches and Goff. The Cavs pushed four more runs across the plate in the inning.
In the fifth frame, Ethier singled to third base, scoring Furches, and
Daniel Wagner doubled down the third base line, scoring
Collin Nelson. After five, the Cavs led 13-2. The final runs that scored for Montreat came from a
Manny Moore double to center in the seventh inning. The hit scored
Brett Pitzer and
Myles Draughn to finalize the onslaught, 19-2.
Montreat used four arms in the game.
Matt Campos got his first win as a Cavalier with his four innings of work. He surrendered five hits and an earned run in his shift. Campos walked just one batter while striking out two. The rest of the bullpen worked well together and pitched a frame each. They combined for five allowed hits and just one run. They walked four batters and did not strike any Nittany Lions out.
Ethier had himself a day with five hits in six at-bats. He totaled four RBIs and two runs scored. Furches had three hits and an RBI, scoring four runs for the Cavs. Behind the duo, four other Montreat players had two hits, and another eight Cavaliers registered one.
The last time Montreat scored 19 runs in a game was last season on Jan. 27 against St. Thomas University when they beat the Bobcats, 19-11. The 24-hit performance from the Cavaliers was the best since Feb. 24, 2018. On that day, the Cavs had 27 hits versus Cincinnati Christian University in a 26-8 victory. Eight of the hits against PSU-Scranton were for extra bases. Montreat only struck out twice during the run-rule game and walked eight times.
On deck for Montreat, it anticipates adding a three-game series against the Brescia University Bearcats to the schedule for this weekend.
