BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— The Montreat men's lacrosse team played its home opener against the No. 6-ranked Indiana Institute of Technology Warriors Saturday afternoon at Pulliam Stadium in Black Mountain, N.C. In the nonconference affair, the visiting Warriors utilized a pair of seven-goal quarters to dispatch of the Cavaliers, 22-8. With the defeat, Montreat moved to 0-3 on the year.
Landon LaGro put the upset-minded Cavs in front just 75 seconds into the contest; however, Indiana Tech (1-0) rattled off five straight strikes over the next 10 minutes to put itself in control of the game, 5-1. LaGro garnered an assist on
Grayson Scott's tally with 1:19 left in the period, but the Warriors scored twice during the final 30 seconds to maintain a 7-2 advantage after the initial frame.
Justin Holland's fifth goal of the season was of the man-up variety, and LaGro took a feed from
D'Andrae McKenzie to pull the hosts within 7-4 merely 4:26 into the second quarter. Despite Montreat's surge, Indiana Tech never wavered, and the visitors steadied themselves as the period continued. A trio of Warrior goals capped off the first-half scoring as the Cavaliers entered the intermission down 10-4.
Like they did during the first frame, the Warriors deposited seven shots into the back of the net during the third quarter. Indiana Tech also played stifling defense, limiting the hosts to one goal thanks to five big saves. Scott bagged a brace with his goal midway through the period, but the visitors expanded their edge to 17-5 before the fourth frame began.
Conrad Stelzel notched his first collegiate goal to open the final quarter, and both Holland and
Gavin Mottram added to the Cavs' total. Indiana Tech still had a few goals left in the tank, though, pouring in five to finish out its 22-8 victory.
The sixth-ranked Warriors ended the day with more shots (53-30), shots on goal (36-18), faceoffs (25-9), ground balls (49-27) and caused turnovers (12-5). Montreat also committed more turnovers (28-18).
Scott and LaGro each registered two goals and an assist to accrue three-point performances. Holland also scored twice, while McKenzie recorded a pair of helpers.
Jay Chance accumulated 14 saves and seven ground balls as the Cavaliers' starting goalkeeper.
Montreat gets back on the road this Wednesday for another out-of-conference showdown versus the Shorter University Hawks. Opening faceoff is set for 5 p.m. in Rome, Ga.
