Men’s lacrosse falters in AAC opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.— Montreat's men's lacrosse team traveled nearly 200 miles northwest to the University of the Cumberlands Patriots for a matinee showing of NAIA men's lacrosse. The Patriots came into the contest ranked No. 3 in the most recent NAIA Men's Lacrosse Coaches' Top 10 Poll. The event marked the first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game for the Cavaliers. The Patriots beat Montreat in Kentucky by a score of 18-4. Faltering in the fixture, the Cavs fell to a record of 0-4 (0-1 AAC).

The Patriots pounced on the Cavaliers quickly, scoring six goals in the opening quarter. Montreat did not register a shot in the period but found some momentum in the next frame. D'Andrae McKenzie scored the opening goal for the Cavs with 6:50 remaining in the second quarter. Montreat scored two more unanswered when Gavin Mottram and Landon LaGro added their names to the scoresheet before the half ended. At the break, the Cavs trailed 8-3.

The Patriots extended their lead in the third period, scoring six times. The Cavs got one back when Mottram scored his second goal of the game. The effort was assisted by LaGro. The Patriots scored four times in the fourth quarter, lunging out of reach from the Cavs. The game concluded 18-4 in favor of the home side.

In the contest, Mottram's two goals doubled his tally on the year, now at four. Two Cavalier goals were assisted, one from LaGro and one from Conrad Stelzel, who assisted LaGro's goal.

Montreat had more saves (9-8) and clears (21-20) than the Patriots in the 60-minute battle. The Cavs also had a higher percentage of on-target shots (80.0 percent) than the hosts (65.8 percent).

The Cavaliers prepare for their next matchup on March 6 when they face the (RV) Siena Heights University Saints. The event will be the second home game for the Cavalier squad. Opening faceoff is slated for 6 p.m. at Pulliam Stadium.
