MARSHALL, Mo.— The Montreat men's wrestling team traveled to Marshall, Mo. on Friday and Saturday for the Missouri Valley Invitational, hosted by Missouri Valley College. With nine wrestlers in action across eight weight classes, the Cavaliers captured four individual wins and a 48
th-place finish out of 53 teams at one of the largest collegiate wrestling events in the country.
A trio of wrestlers combined for Montreat's four victories, and freshman
Mikai Brinson led the way with two of those triumphs. The Grayson, Ga. native started his run in the 141-lb bracket with a high-scoring 20-14 win over a wrestler from Avila University. Following a 19-4 tech fall defeat in round two, Brinson bounced back with another decision, this time 13-9, against a Brewton-Parker College participant. Brinson's tournament ultimately ended in the third round of the consolation bracket via a 10-3 decision.
Dylan Hogan and
Milosz Gargol each went 1-2 at 165 and 184, respectively. For Hogan, he responded well to a major decision defeat with a pin in just 1:19 over a Siena Heights University competitor. The Lackawanna College transfer then lost via another major decision to conclude his showing.
All three of Gargol's bouts ended with a pin. A native of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., Gargol nearly made it to the bell before being pinned in 6:54 during his initial matchup. The junior answered with a pin of his own in the consolation bracket, needing just 2:16 to do so against a Hastings College foe. Gargol was then pinned in 2:31 by a fellow Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) wrestler from Reinhardt University.
The Cavs' four wins garnered 6.5 points on the team leaderboard.
