FORT WAYNE , Ind.— The Montreat women's wrestling team traveled to Fort Wayne, Ind. this weekend to wrestle in the Warrior Duals, a full Friday of women's wrestling team duals. The Cavs fought in four duals today and will compete in individual tournaments tomorrow. Montreat went 2-2 in the team competitions.
The Cavaliers faced No. 9-ranked Campbellsville University in their opening dual of the day. The first four bouts were forfeits with just one benefiting the Cavs. Out to a 15-5 score, the Tigers pounced and didn't give up any more points the rest of the dual. In the contest, Montreat faced six consecutive ranked wrestlers and lost 43-5.
In dual number two, Montreat faced Siena Heights University. Sandwiched by double forfeits,
Morgan Repasky moved up a weight class to 110 and pinned her opponent in 1:03 to give the Cavaliers the lead.
Aiyana Bryant secured a forfeit at 124 to double the Cav lead. The Saints got on the score sheet with a 13-2 tech fall and a forfeit to push the overall score to 11-9 still in favor of Montreat. At 145,
Uriah Peters-Gutierrez pinned her opponent in 1:40, adding five points to the Cavs. Phoenix Waters of Siena Heights won via decision 9-7 over
Nicole Lewis at 160. With just two bouts left, Montreat led the dual 17-12. The Cavaliers and Saints then traded five-point bouts to conclude the dual 22-17.
The second win for the Cavaliers came against Rochester Christian University by a score of 29-10. The dual included two double forfeits. After the forfeits and a knotted scoresheet, the Cavs never looked back as they scored the final 19 points in the match. Peters-Gutierrez notched a 10-0 tech fall, and Montreat tallied forfeits across the final three bouts.
The concluding dual of the day came against the seventh-ranked Indiana Tech Warriors. The Warriors scored five points in each of the first six bouts, jumping out to a 30-0 lead. Peters-Gutierrez cancelled the shutout as she pinned Adriana Cabello in 1:35. The only other point for the Cavs came from
Audrey Gribble when she lost by decision 10-2 versus Indiana Tech's Catherine McNulty. The Warriors bested the Cavaliers 43-6.
"I am proud of how the team competed today," said head coach
Koby Reyes. "We got to see some of the best teams in the country and will get to see more tomorrow. We're taking steps in the right direction every week, and that's encouraging for our program."
