ATHENS, Tenn.— The Montreat women's soccer team began its Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) slate Saturday afternoon when it faced off against the Tennessee Wesleyan University Bulldogs in Athens, Tenn. Thanks to
Charlotte Craver's goal early in the second half, the visitors earned a 1-1 draw at TWU, their first point from a match in Athens since 2012. With the tie, the Cavaliers moved to 1-2-1 (0-0-1 AAC) on the season.
Neither side found the back of the net through 45 minutes of action, but Tennessee Wesleyan (0-1-1, 0-0-1 AAC) controlled much of the possession, as well as the flow of play, at home.
The hosts held an 8-1 edge in shots during the first half, including a 3-1 advantage in shots on target; however, the extra opportunities at goal ultimately didn't mean much as
Logan White proved up to the task. A native of Surprise, Ariz., White stopped all three attempts on target, keeping the contest level at 0-0. Both squads notched one corner kick in the initial period.
Montreat flipped a switch as the second half began and suddenly became the aggressor. Pushing forward and applying pressure, the Cavs managed to break the scoreless deadlock. Craver ripped a shot across the face of goal and tucked it inside the right post, registering her third tally of the season and putting the visitors in front, 1-0, just 7:24 into the frame.
TWU had an answer roughly seven minutes later, tying the game at 1-1. That goal flipped the momentum in the hosts' favor, and the Bulldogs started to fire shots towards the Montreat net.
After evening the score, Tennessee Wesleyan attempted eight additional shots across the final 26 minutes. White and the Cavalier defense stood tall, though, with the former recording a pair of saves and the defense blocking three additional strikes. Behind Craver's goal and a strong team defensive effort, the Cavs secured a 1-1 draw and their first point from at match at TWU since Sept. 22, 2012.
"We came ready to battle today," said head coach
Kristin Eggert. "I am really excited to see where this group can go as we continue to take ground."
The Bulldogs closed the contest with edges in shots (19-2), shots on goal (6-2) and corner kicks (8-3). Meanwhile, White made five saves compared to the Bulldogs' one.
Montreat remains on the road for another AAC matchup on Wednesday, this time at Kentucky Christian University. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. in Grayson, Ky.
