GRAYSON, Ky.— The Montreat women's soccer team wasted no time in establishing its dominance over the Kentucky Christian University Knights Wednesday afternoon in Grayson, Ky. A swift goal 15 seconds into the match put the visitors on top for good, and the Cavaliers coasted to a 6-0 clean sheet victory in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play. With the win, the Cavs' record now stands at 2-2-1 (1-0-1 AAC).
Charlotte Craver's fourth goal of the season got the action started in Kentucky.
Kayla Roseman and
Katherine Wombwell delivered well-placed passes, setting Craver up for a one-timer through traffic in the 18-yard box.
After scoring merely 15 seconds into the showdown, Montreat managed to build on its advantage. The Cavaliers slotted three additional strikes past the Kentucky Christian (1-4-0, 0-3-0 AAC) goalie prior to the first half's conclusion.
Natalie Hall's first career goal doubled the Cavs' edge to 2-0 at the 19:40 mark, and
Ellie Porter expanded that advantage out to three goals just 3:11 later. Hall added her second and the team's fourth tally in the 31
st minute, effectively putting the contest away for good.
In addition to Montreat's 4-0 lead at the break, the visitors also held the upper hand in shots (11-1), shots on goal (8-1) and corner kicks (2-0).
Anna Weissenfluh stopped KCU's lone attempt on target through 45 minutes.
Rozsa Williford registered the initial goal of her Cavalier career in the 68
th minute. Hall, who did the same earlier in the match, notched an assist on Williford's tally, pushing the score to 5-0 in the process.
Jocelyn Stanley closed out the scoring and sealed Montreat's 6-0 win with her first strike of the season. One-touch passing from
Kaylene Manternach and
Katie Burton led to a one-touch blast from Stanley in the final minute of action.
"It was an excellent start to execute from the kickoff," said head coach
Kristin Eggert. "It was great to get our first shutout. We are building a mindset to be consistent in the details."
As expected with a 6-0 final, the stats heavily favored the Cavs. Montreat owned massive edges in shots (23-3), shots on goal (14-2) and corner kicks (8-0). The Knights made eight saves, while Weissenfluh picked up her first career win along with two stops in net. Hall led the squad in points with a pair of goals and an assist, and Harpel added two helpers of her own.
Montreat returns to Pulliam Stadium next Wednesday for an AAC tilt versus Bluefield University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. in Black Mountain, N.C.
