BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— Playing at home for the first time in the month of September, the Montreat women's soccer team welcomed the Bluefield University Rams to Pulliam Stadium Wednesday night for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest. The Cavaliers only needed one goal thanks to their second consecutive clean sheet, but the hosts still went ahead and seized a 4-0 triumph to improve to 3-2-1 (2-0-1 AAC) on the year.
Montreat controlled all facets of play on Wednesday, particularly in the first half. The Cavs didn't surrender a single shot attempt through 45 minutes while taking 24 of their own. Four of those looks landed on frame, including one that made its way into the back of the net.
Rebeca Cruz Manon scored the first goal of her Cavalier career off a set piece with 6:23 remaining in the first half. She wasn't finished there, however. The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native doubled the lead in the 68
th minute, pushing Montreat's edge to 2-0.
Rosza Williford erased any doubt as to who the match winner would be just 10 minutes later, depositing her second tally of the season thanks in part to an
Olivia Ostwalt assist. Ostwalt also joined in on the scoring with her initial strike of the year off
Kara Gilsdorf's pass with 6:16 left.
In the end, Montreat cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over Bluefield (2-4-1, 0-3-1 AAC).
"That was the best possession we have had all season," said head coach
Kristin Eggert. "We are building in the direction we want to go."
The final stat line proved even more lopsided than the score. The Cavs racked up 40 shots compared to BU's one, as well as a 9-1 edge in attempts on frame. Corner kicks were also skewed in the home team's favor (9-1).
Logan White stopped the lone shot she faced in net for her second win of the campaign.
Montreat remains at Pulliam Stadium for its next action this Saturday versus the University of Pikeville Bears. The Homecoming & Family Weekend kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Black Mountain, N.C.
