Men’s Track & Field Hits National Standard at 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C.— The Montreat men's track & field team resumed its outdoor slate by competing at the 49er Classic, a 3-day meet hosted by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, from Thursday through Saturday in the Queen City. With 17 entries spread out across 10 events, the Cavaliers delivered one national standard and eight top-30 finishes against predominantly NCAA athletes.

Caleb Wells got the action started for Montreat with the decathlon, which spanned both Thursday and Friday. The Black Mountain, N.C. native proved to be the lone NAIA athlete in the event, but that didn't stop him from beating out a trio of NCAA Division I competitors. Wells ultimately finished 12th overall with 3,542 points.

Gregory Curry II captured the Cavs' top placement from Friday with a leap of 6.83m in the long jump. Curry II's effort garnered seventh of 52 jumpers. His teammate, Drew Bryant, joined him inside the top 30 with a 28th-place mark of 6.27m.

Montreat notched one other top-10 performance on Friday as Dylan Branch excelled in the 1500m. A native of Avon Park, Fla., Branch beat out a plethora of NCAA Division I participants when he ended eighth in the race. Among the field of 105 runners, Branch's 3:52.50 time met the NAIA "A" standard exactly.

The Cavaliers rounded out Friday night with several strong showings in long distance events. In the 5000m invite, Caleb Wright registered a personal-best time of 15:00.19, good for 17th. Meanwhile, Rene Tamez (18th; 32:05.63) and Caleb Potter (19th; 32:11.55) ran in the 10k, with Potter also collecting a career best.

Ruchen Blaauw secured the Cavs' lone top-30 result from Saturday. The Cape Town, South Africa native needed just 1:55.01 to complete his 800m, a time that earned himself 11th out of 82 runners.
