Blevins’ Runner-Up Performance Headlines Day Two of National Indoor Meet

BROOKINGS, S.D.— The Montreat men's and women's track & field teams participated in five different events on Friday during day two of the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Brookings, S.D. With four of those competitions taking place on the track and another in the field, the Cavaliers captured one NAIA All-American nod and two school records.

Wyatt Wilson began the day for the Cavs shortly after noon with the men's 3000m race walk. A native of Shelby, N.C., Wilson proved to be the first Montreat athlete to compete in a final at this year's national meet. Breaking his own school record with a time of 14:55.35, Wilson finished second in his heat and 13th overall among a field of 26 racers.

Kilia Hasty kicked off a trio of prelim events in short succession late Friday afternoon when she took part in the women's 1000m. The junior from Spindale, N.C. concluded her run in 3:04.30, good for 19th out of 21 individuals.

Preliminary action continued moments later when Ruchen Blaauw tried his hand at the men's 1000m event. Blaauw sped around the track in 2:25.96, the fourth-fastest time in the 22-competitor field. Not only was Blaauw's effort strong enough to qualify for tomorrow's 1000m final, but it also broke Montreat's program record by 1.99 seconds.

Dylan Branch and Nathan Stamey rounded out the prelims on the track for Montreat as they gave their all in the men's 3000m. A native of Avon Park, Fla., Branch notched the seventh-quickest race among 35 participants. His time of 8:30.89 earned automatic qualification to the 3000m final tomorrow due to it being the third-fastest in his heat. Stamey ended his race in 9:10.28 to place 33rd.

Montreat's final event on Friday was also its lone field event. In the men's long jump, Dustin Blevins saved the best for last. After winning his flight to start the competition, the fifth-year track & field star secured the 10th All-American honor of his storied Cavalier career, leaping 7.50m to a second-place finish out of 25 jumpers. Blevins' national runner-up mark handed Montreat eight points on the team scoreboard, meaning the Montreat men's track & field squad ended day two in a tie for ninth.
