LEBANON, Tenn.— The Montreat men's wrestling team sent 10 athletes to compete at the Cumberland Open hosted by Cumberland University in Tennessee on Saturday. With a couple of runs in consolation brackets, the Cavaliers amassed 12 total wins.
Zeke Grabowski was the lone Cav with four wins on the day as he participated in the 125-lb bracket. After a 17-1 tech fall win and a defeat to No. 3, Grabowski made his way to the third-place match thanks to a series of victories. He pinned his opponent in the second consolation round before winning via major decision and advancing due to a medical forfeit. Ultimately, Grabowski fell in a close 4-2 decision to claim fourth place.
Braden Wharton collected a trio of wins at 149. Starting with a tight 4-2 decision loss, Wharton grabbed a 5-3 decision triumph prior to a medical forfeit that saw him take on teammate
Alex Chester. Wharton prevailed in a 16-0 tech fall against his fellow Cavalier but dropped his bout in the consolation semifinal.
Caleb Johnson-White picked up multiple victories by pinning the first two opponents he faced in the 165-lb bracket, while Chester earned a 13-7 decision and a medical forfeit to tally his two wins at 149.
Branson Bennett notched an 8-1 decision in his initial matchup to end as the final Montreat wrestler to win at the open.
