Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Quintin Olson

First set spark not enough for win in Waleska

WALESKA, Ga.— Montreat's women's volleyball team traveled to Reinhardt University for the first of back-to-back matches at the Eagles. In the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest, the visitors sparked life into the match with a first set win, but it was not enough to get the job done as the Eagles (22-5, 17-1 AAC) won in four sets with scores of 20-25, 25-17, 25-16 and 25-14.

Set one was taken by the Cavaliers with authority. Montreat (8-9, 8-9 AAC) jumped out to a 14-6 lead thanks to a 6-0 run. Cate Hale's two serving aces along with an Allie Anderson kill had the Cavs thumping. Reinhardt battled and outscored Montreat briefly, but the Eagles lost some traction towards the end of the set as they trailed 22-15. They found their groove after a 5-0 run to be within two points late; however, the Cavaliers slammed the door on the frame with a Karly Horn kill and a Reese Davis ace as they took it 25-20.

Starting the second frame, Montreat was still energized from its first set victory to lead via a 10-7 scoreline. That's when Reinhardt kicked things into another gear. The hosts scored five of the next six points, forcing a Cav timeout. The Eagles then put away seven of the next 11 leading to another Montreat timeout. Following the break, Reinhardt pounced on a 4-0 run which helped it claim set two, 25-17.

The ensuing frames were controlled by the Eagles. They jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the third. A tight stretch of play saw the scoreline improve to 19-10, still with Reinhardt leading. A short 3-0 run from Montreat gave it a chance thanks to another Horn kill. This time, it was the host slamming the door, scoring six of the final nine points to claim the frame.

The final set turned out to be filled with runs all over. Tied at four, the home team scored 13 of the next 18 points. The 17-9 lead from the Eagles only improved as shortly after they quickly doubled the Cavs by a score of 22-11. Alternating 3-0 runs were at the conclusion of this set as Reinhardt finalized the match, 25-14.

Karly Horn made her presence known as she tallied 17 kills. The next closest was Harrington with nine. Katie Alexander had the most assists of any Cavalier with 33, and she also had the most digs with 18 to capture another double-double on the year. Cate Hale made a splash in the serving game, totaling four aces on the night.

The Eagles led in multiple statistical categories during the contest. Kills (59-38), hitting percentage (.250 to .085), assists (57-36), aces (8-6), and digs (85-67) were all in Reinhardt's.

The Cavs look forward to game two versus RU tomorrow right back in Waleska, Ga. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m.
