MONTREAT, N.C.— The Montreat baseball team hosted the Lourdes University Gray Wolves in a non-conference contest Monday afternoon at Newell Field. Behind the Gray Wolves' 6-run second and an offensive outburst that saw the visitors score in each of the initial five innings, the Cavaliers fell to their counterparts in seven innings, 10-0. With the defeat, the Cavs fell to 9-11 overall.
Lourdes (3-5) used timely hitting and a few Montreat errors to jump out to a 10-0 lead midway through the contest. The Gray Wolves scored in each of the first five innings and plated six runs in the top of the second alone to expand their advantage. Seven of Lourdes' 10 runs were unearned, and the visitors batted 6-for-12 with runners on base as they vaulted in front by 10.
Montreat had a few opportunities to score as its leadoff hitter reached base safely in each of the first three frames; however, a pair of double plays ended two of those rallies as the Cavaliers remained scoreless heading into the late innings.
Needing a run to extend the game, the Cavs loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. Despite the men on base, a strikeout ended the rally and saw Lourdes finish up a 10-0 triumph.
Six Cavaliers notched a single hit during the defeat, while
Norman Kelly and
Necumba Booker Jr. each reached base safely twice via a walk and hit by pitch.
Harold Aguilera threw two innings of relief, surrendering one unearned run, while
Rawley Stinson pitched a scoreless frame.
The Montreat baseball team heads to Greenville, S.C. tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader against the Bob Jones University Bruins. First pitch of game one at Fluor Field is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
