Baseball Rebounds with Wins at Fluor Field

GREENVILLE, S.C.— The Montreat baseball team played a pair of contests at the home of the Greenville Drive Tuesday afternoon, taking on the Bob Jones University Bruins in a non-conference doubleheader. Thanks to 8-2 and 12-3 victories, the Cavaliers evened their overall record at 11-11.

The Cavalier offense got on the board first in the second inning. Following a single by Caleb Abshier, Michael Bell brought the transfer around to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Then, in the third frame, Abshier added to the advantage with an RBI base knock, and smart baserunning by Will Cheek expanded the edge to three before Abshier scored on the Cavs' third hit of the inning to go up 4-0 through three.

In the top of the fourth, a pair of sacrifice flies sandwiched an error by the Bruins as the Cavaliers extended the gap to seven prior to notching an eighth and final run due to Abshier's third hit of the contest.

Though Bob Jones recorded runs in the sixth and seventh innings, the Cavaliers held on for a comfortable 6-run triumph in the opening matchup. Tyler Best threw a complete-game effort on the mound, surrendering just runs while striking out six batters for his first win of the season.

In game two, Montreat's offense prevailed again as the Cavs scored runs in the first three innings. A Bruins error crossed one run in the initial frame, and, though Bob Jones knotted the competition at one in the bottom of the first, the Cavaliers responded with back-to-back 3-run innings to lead 7-1. Over the span, Montreat amassed eight baserunners and four hits to expand the advantage to six.

BJU (2-11) answered with two in the third; however, the Cavs' third 3-spot of the matchup helped put the visitors up 10-3 in the fifth. Two errors, in addition to RBIs by Isaac Castro and Necumba Booker Jr., gave the Cavaliers their largest edge to that point before Montreat rounded out its scoring with another pair of runs in the seventh thanks to a Bruins wild pitch and sacrifice fly off Castro's bat. With the 9-run victory that was sealed by the Cavs' pitching, the visitors handed Bob Jones its 10th straight loss. Joshua Allen got his first start of the year for the Cavs, while Joe Tomasello, Hunter WilmothNate Kiser and Caden Wright each threw at least one scoreless inning in the win.

Baseball now continues its 7-game road trip with a series at Milligan. Game one is currently slated for Friday at 3:00 p.m.; however, be sure to check montreatcavaliers.com for schedule updates due to the possibility of inclement weather.
