LAKE WALES, Fla.— The Montreat baseball team wrapped up its 4-game set at Warner University on Saturday by splitting the contests for the second straight day. Against the Royals in a non-conference doubleheader, the Cavs tallied a 5-0 victory in the opening contest, while Warner took game two by a 22-1 scoreline as Montreat moved to 2-6 on the young season.
Game one started out as a pitchers' duel as
Daniel Willie took the mound for the Cavaliers. Both teams surrendered just one baserunner through three innings via walks before good eyes at the plate assisted the visitors in scoring a run in the fourth frame.
Montreat drew three walks, advanced on two wild pitches and notched a hit-by-pitch to produce the run in the top of the fourth.
Norman Kelly, who walked to open the inning, came around to score on a wild pitch to give the Cavs a 1-0 advantage.
Willie continued his dominance on the mound, allowing only a pair of hits through his initial five frames while striking out seven Royals over the span.
Thanks to another pair of free bases and two sacrifice hits, including a sac fly by
Caleb Abshier that plated
Cole Parker after he pinch ran for
Tarik Latchmansingh, the Cavs doubled their lead. Montreat's second hit of the day, a double from
Necumba Booker Jr., expanded the edge out to three before a wild pitch and error brought Booker Jr. around to complete the 3-run frame.
The Cavaliers padded their lead with an insurance run in the seventh thanks to an RBI single from
Stephen Karis, and Willie closed out his impressive complete-game performance to seal the 5-run win. Willie ended his afternoon with 11 strikeouts and just three hits in the shutout victory. Four different Cavs notched hits in the game.
Warner (5-5) dominated the latter competition from the start, plating five runs in the bottom of the first. The home side extended the advantage to seven with a pair of runs before Montreat got on the board as
Johnny DiBenedetto notched a hit-by-pitch in the top of the fourth for the Cavaliers' lone run of the ballgame.
The Royals poured on the offense in the remaining frames, scoring six in the bottom of the fourth prior to a 9-spot in the sixth that saw WU triumph by 21. Warner outhit the Cavs 18-3, but
Jeff Cardazzone (2-2) collected two of the visitors' base knocks.
Baseball continues its season-beginning road trip with a doubleheader at Carolina University on Tuesday. First pitch of game one in Winston-Salem, N.C. is slated for 2:00 p.m.
