WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.— Taking on the Carolina University Bruins in a non-conference road doubleheader, the Montreat baseball team belted six home runs, proving enough to pick up a 6-4 win in game one and plate 10 runs in a 15-10 defeat in the latter contest. With the results, the Cavs now sit at a 3-7 record entering conference action on Friday.
Early offense powered the Cavaliers out to a lead in the first contest as Montreat scored in the initial four frames. The longball helped the Cavs establish their edge thanks to four home runs over three innings that produced five runs.
Norman Kelly led off the twin bill with a solo blast before
Tarik Latchmansingh collected a homer of his own to give Montreat a 2-0 lead. After the Bruins responded with a run in the bottom of the first,
Isaac Castro blasted his first home run of the year to put the Cavs up 3-1.
Necumba Booker Jr. finished off the flurry of longballs with a 2-run shot in the third to expand the advantage to four.
Two quick hits in the fourth created the sixth score of the matchup for the Cavaliers as
Caleb Abshier plated Latchmansingh with an RBI single. Though the visitors surrendered a run in the fourth and two in the seventh, Montreat held on for a 6-4 triumph.
Noah Christopher got the start for the Cavs and pitched 4.2 innings, striking out seven Bruins and giving up just three hits. Offensively, Castro (2-3), Kelly (2-4) and Latchmansingh (2-4) all finished with multiple hits.
Game two featured a plethora of offense as the teams combined for 25 runs. Things began when
Jaider Morelos came around on a wild pitch before
Stephen Karis singled in Latchmansingh to repeat the score from the initial half-inning of the first competition.
After CU cut its deficit in half, Latchmansingh responded with another bomb to restore the 2-run edge in the third. Carolina (2-4) then plated seven in the bottom of the frame to lead 8-3.
Morelos brought the Cavaliers closer thanks to his 3-run shot in the top of the fourth, and, after the Bruins notched a run in the fourth, Montreat answered with another Morelos RBI in the fifth. Despite a 3-run frame by the Cavs that included a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Blake Watts and a 2-RBI single from
Dylan Sayler, six more runs in the bottom of the fifth saw Carolina seal its victory with a 15-run outburst.
Seven different Cavaliers tallied hits, led by Morelos and Latchmansingh, who both went 2-for-4 at the plate. Eight Cavs scored a run, and Morelos captained the team with four RBIs in game two.
Baseball returns to play its home and conference opener against Bryan College on Friday. First pitch versus the Lions is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
