WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.— The Montreat men's track & field team continued its opening week of indoor action on Saturday at the Visit Winston-Salem College Kick-off. Competing at JDL Fast Track for the first of five scheduled dates this season, the Cavaliers collected 12 top-15 marks to go along with a school record and two national standards.
Dylan Branch delivered arguably the most impressive performance of the day as he set a new school record for the second time this week. After breaking the program's top time in the 5000m on Tuesday, Branch did the same on Saturday in the 3000m. The Avon Park, Fla. native captured first place with an NAIA "A" standard time of 8:32.96, beating out 41 other runners, including six NCAA Division I athletes, in the process.
Nathan Stamey (8:44.82) and
Caleb Wright (8:46.01) finished seventh and eighth, respectively, while
Ethan Stamey rounded out the Cavs inside the top 15 with his 11
th-place time (8:50.43).
Not to be outdone,
Dustin Blevins compiled a big day across three events. In his first of two field events, Blevins seized the Cavs' second national standard of the meet. Missing the top mark and an NAIA "A" standard by just 0.01m in the long jump, Blevins produced a leap of 7.09m, good enough for second place out of 41 jumpers. The King, N.C. native met the NAIA "B" standard and topped 15 NCAA Division I competitors with his showing.
Blevins also secured a strong finish in the triple jump, bounding 13.92m to place third among a 25-jumper field. Meanwhile, on the track, Blevins beat out a field of 52 sprinters with his personal-best time of 6.93 seconds to win the 60m qualifying race.
Montreat claimed top-15 placements in four other events on Saturday. In the 600m,
Darrian Bonilla led the Cavaliers across the finish line thanks to his career-best performance in the event. With his 1:28.49 race, Bonilla outran four NCAA Division I runners en route to eighth place out of 25 individuals.
Mark Blalock made his debut in the event and needed just 1:29.08 to finish 11
th. Meanwhile, in the one mile,
Ruchen Blaauw beat 11 DI runners with an eighth-place time of 4:27.22.
Caleb Wells represented the Cavs in the pole vault as he cleared 3.35m to place 13
th overall, and
Gregory Curry II wrapped up the field events by finishing 14
th with a 1.84m mark in the high jump.
"This week's meets have been a good reward for a long fall of training," said head coach Jacob Simms. "It's wonderful to see the early signs of a strong team culture and potential for what this program can do this coming winter and spring. Our hope this week was to continue to learn what it means to compete for God's glory. The mission continues."
