WAGRAM, N.C.— The Montreat men's golf team pieced together an impressive two-day performance on Monday and Tuesday at the Deercroft Spring Break Invite, hosted by St. Andrews University. Across two rounds of action at the Deercroft Golf Club in Wagram, N.C., the Cavaliers scored an impressive 626 to place second out of 12 teams.
Playing on the par-72 course, the Cavaliers put together one of their best rounds of the season on day one. Montreat shot 307 as a team, only eight strokes behind the hosts for the top spot on the leaderboard. On the other side, the Cavs sat three strokes ahead of Belmont Abbey.
Ben Leonard and
Hayden Zitzewitz led the charge in round one as both shot a three-over-par 75.
Ben Coggins, who was golfing unattached at the Deercroft Spring Break Invite, also scored a 75 in his first round of play. All three athletes sat in a tie for fifth through 18 holes.
Aaron Elmore (78) and
Cole Wiley (79) joined their fellow Cavaliers with day-one scores under 80. Elmore concluded his first day of action in a tie for 17
th place, while Wiley wasn't far behind in a tie at 21
st.
Seth Perry was the fifth and final Montreat golfer on Monday, shooting an 83 to head into the clubhouse locked in a tie for 40
th.
The Cavaliers, like several of their competitors, shot a little worse as a team on day two. Montreat scored a 319 as a squad in round two, bringing its two-day total to 626, good for second out of 12 teams.
Zitzewitz continued his solid tournament on Tuesday with a 77, which, when combined with his day one score of 75, earned him a 152 total and the seventh-best individual score of the tournament.
Leonard shot an 82 in round two, meaning his total score of 157 tied for 12
th-best out of 75 competitors. Elmore and Wiley each tallied an 80 on the tournament's second day, which kept them within a single stroke of each other on the leaderboard at 158 and 159, respectively. Elmore finished in a tie for 14
th after 36 holes of golf, while Wiley tied for 20
th.
Perry showcased his consistency for the Cavaliers with another 83 in round two, bringing his two-day score to 166 and his place on the leaderboard into a four-way tie for 44
th.
Coggins,
Ryan Poblacion and
Hunter Kendall all golfed as individuals at the Deercroft Spring Break Invite. Coggins followed up his remarkable first-round 75 with an 83, good for T-14
th overall. Poblacion (82-79) and Kendall (87-92) finished the two-day tournament in a tie for 29
th and a tie for 63
rd, respectively.

The Montreat men's golf team now enjoys a brief break before returning to competition on April 11-12 at the Mountain Empire Intercollegiate. The two-day competition is hosted by Milligan University at the Elizabethton Golf Club in Elizabethton, Tenn.
