BRUNSWICK, Ga.— The Montreat men's golf team utilized a strong second round to finish in the middle of the pack at the Coastal Georgia Invitational as the Cavaliers began their spring season. Completing two rounds on Monday and another 18 holes on Tuesday, the Cavs registered a seventh-place showing out of the 15 participating schools.
After sitting tied for 10
th through 18 holes of action, Montreat improved its standing drastically with a 302 as a team. The round, which took 18 less strokes than the former, vaulted the Cavaliers into seventh place. The Cavs produced a 316 score on the final day to hold steady ahead of Bethel University (Tenn.) by one stroke (938).
In round one,
Ben Leonard captained the Cavaliers with a low round 77, while
Hayden Zitzewitz and
Aaron Elmore both recorded 80s.
Cole Wiley bounced back from a first-round 83 to shoot the lowest round of any Montreat golfer at the tournament, a one-under 71, on his second 18 holes. Four of the five Cavaliers tallied rounds of 78 or lower as Leonard bested his first round by a stroke (76), Elmore shot a 77 and Zitzewitz produced a 78.
On Tuesday, Zitzewitz notched a 75, while Wiley scored a 77 and Elmore needed 79 strokes to conclude the last 18 holes. Wiley ended the tournament as the top-finishing Cav, tying for 26
th. Zitzewitz played only two more shots than Wiley over the 54 holes to tie for 32
nd and Elmore finished tied for 39
th three shots back from Zitzewitz.
Leonard finished in a tie for 50
th as he was four shots behind Elmore.
Ryan Poblacion tallied an 83-83-85 tournament to end 11 shots back from Leonard.
Hunter Kendall (T55) and
Seth Perry (T61) competed as individuals at the tournament. Kendall turned in a low round of 77 on the second 18 holes and Perry carded 81s in both the first and third rounds.

Following a scrimmage next Thursday, men's golf continues its season with a trip to Wagram, N.C. for the St. Andrews Invitational on Mar. 28 and 29.
