Men’s Wrestling Slowed at No. 3 Southeastern

LAKELAND, Fla.— The Montreat men's wrestling team opened Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) action with a matchup against the No. 3 squad in the country, the Southeastern University Fire, on the road Friday night. In the Cavaliers' first dual of the 2022-23 year, the Fire held the visitors scoreless to the tune of a 50-0 result, moving the Cavs to 0-1 both overall and in AAC contests.

Southeastern (2-1, 2-0 AAC) controlled the competition from the beginning, utilizing three pins and a pair of tech falls to take a 28-0 lead through five of the 10 matches.

The Cavaliers registered their first takedown of the match as Dalton Towe closed the gap at 165. Towe fought back from down double digits and earned three points from stalling warnings, but ultimately fell by a 15-9 decision.

After the Fire earned a major decision to make the score 35-0, Tyler McDonald collected Montreat's second and final takedown of the night, but dropped his bout at 184 in 2:35. Seth Williamson held his opponent to eight points, the fewest any SEU competitor scored; however, a decision at 197 and pin at 285 went the way of the home side as Southeastern completed its shutout victory.

Men's wrestling continues conference play with a pair of duals in West Palm Beach, Fla. tomorrow evening. The Cavaliers face St. Thomas University at 5:00 p.m. before taking on Keiser University at 6:00 p.m.
