MONTREAT, N.C.— In an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) battle at home against the Reinhardt University Eagles, the Montreat volleyball team dropped a 3-set contest Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Cavaliers moved to 8-19 (7-12 AAC) on the year.
In the first frame, Reinhardt (17-12, 15-4 AAC) jumped out to a 10-5 lead thanks to six quick kills. The Cavaliers then responded, utilizing a pair of blocks and three kills by
Shalice Lynch on as many swings to even the set at 10. RU went on a short spurt to lead 19-14 and, though the home team trimmed the deficit to three multiple times and the Cavs notched four blocks in the set, the Eagles ended the set on a 4-0 run to go up 1-0 with a 25-18 win.
After Montreat started the second frame by claiming six of the opening eight points, the visitors answered with a 12-2 stretch to give them control of the set with a 14-8 advantage. Though the Cavs came within three points (16-13) due to four Eagles miscues, timely Cavalier attack errors aided Reinhardt to a 25-19 victory as RU led 2-0 in the match.
The third set featured back-and-forth action as the Cavaliers attempted to stay alive in the match. With the score knotted at nine, the Eagles built a 3-point edge; however, consistent attacks by Montreat, including seven third-set kills from
Kamryn Wolf, allowed the home side to fight back and tie the score at 22. Although the Cavs had a pair of set points, Reinhardt staved off both and captured the third frame by a score of 28-26 to complete their sweep.
Overall, the visitors led in total kills (39-30), hitting percentage (.196-.099), assists (38-29) and digs (43-38), while the Cavaliers bested the Eagles in blocking (10.0-9.0). Wolf led all players with 11 kills, and
Reese Davis captained all athletes with 22 assists.
Katie Dickey added eight kills and led the team with seven digs. Five Montreat players were in on multiple blocks as Lynch and
