DAYTON, Tenn.— The Montreat volleyball team traveled to Tennessee for its final road contest of the 2022 season, a match against the Bryan College Lions. The Cavaliers fought but dropped three straight sets to fall 3-0 and move to 8-20 (7-13 AAC) on the year.
Bryan (25-4, 19-2 AAC) captured five of the first six points, but two kills from
Kamryn Wolf, one from
Katie Dickey, a pair of blocks and two aces fueled a 7-0 stretch that saw the Cavs go up 8-5. Though the Cavaliers attempted to stunt the home team's offense, the Lions utilized a strong attack to lead once more. Seven straight points helped BC reestablish a 4-point edge (12-8), and despite seven first-set kills from Dickey, the Lions notched a 1-0 advantage in the match with a 25-18 victory. Bryan tallied 15 kills and a .216 hitting percentage, while Montreat committed seven miscues on the attack with 11 kills.
Two early kills by
Destini Phifer had the Cavs close to the Lions in the second frame (8-6); however, a similar trend to the first unfolded in the set. Bryan used another 14 kills, this time with a .393 hitting percentage, to power to a 2-0 lead. The Lions finished the set on a 17-6 run thanks to the kills coupled with an additional seven Montreat attack errors to triumph 25-12.
After the score was knotted at both one and two in the third set, the Lions collected six straight to go up 8-2. BC propelled itself via offense once again as the home side recorded its best hitting frame of the match to seal the win. The Cavaliers registered eight kills, but Bryan overwhelmed the Montreat defense with 18 en route to a 25-15 win and a 3-set sweep.
Overall, the home team led offensively (47 kills, .333 hitting percentage) over the Cavs (26 kills, .063 hitting percentage), while also tallying more assists (45-26) and digs (62-47) than their counterparts. Dickey captained the squad and tied for the match-high with 12 kills, and Phifer and Wolf each added five.
Reese Davis ended with a team-best 24 helpers, and
Cate Hale led the team with a career-high 16 digs. Dickey rounded out her 12
th double-double of the season with 10 digs.
Volleyball ends the regular season with a home match on Saturday against Kentucky Christian. First serve in McAlister Gymnasium is slated for 11:00 a.m.
