WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.— The Montreat wrestling team took on the No.-3 ranked Southeastern University Fire and the Keiser University Seahawks at the Seahawk Duals on Saturday in Florida. The Cavaliers fought valiantly against both opponents, but dropped the match versus the Fire 27-15 and the dual against the hosts 29-20. With the defeats, wrestling sits at a 4-10 record for the season.
After going down 4-0, the Cavaliers rebounded against the top-5 ranked Fire at 133.
Braden Wharton pinned his opponent in just 2:07 to give Montreat a 6-4 edge overall. The teams then traded the next two matches via decisions as
Mohamed Ben Hafsia narrowly dropped his first match with the Cavs 10-8 in overtime at 141 and
Landon Chambers registered an 11-7 decision at 149.
Southeastern (12-2) answered Montreat's run with a trio of victories to go up 21-9. Following a forfeit from both squads at 184,
Seth Williamson tallied a forfeit triumph at 197 to complete the Cavaliers' scoring. Ultimately, the Cavs fell to the Fire 27-15.
Montreat then battled the hosts Keiser University. The Seahawks pinned the Cavs to start the dual, but a forfeit triumph by Wharton at 133 evened the matchup at six.
Jonathan Zafra then gave the visitors the lead with a pin over his opposition at 141.
A stretch of three matches in favor of KU from 149 to 165 and a control of mat team point penalty on the Cavs helped the home team go up 19-11, but the Cavaliers would respond.
Easton Griffin collected a tight 4-3 decision win at 174 before
Seth Williamson earned a forfeit win at 197 to cut Montreat's deficit to five (25-20) heading into the final bout.
Though the Cavs pulled within striking distance, Keiser (2-7) utilized a major decision at 285 to take the match by nine.
