DAYTON, Tenn.— The Montreat volleyball team traveled to Bryan College Tuesday night for a conference matchup with the Lions. Despite an admirable fight from the Cavaliers, Bryan claimed the competition by a score of 3-0. The Cavs move to 4-6 (0-4 AAC) with the loss.
In set number one, the Lions stormed out to a 12-5 advantage following a trio of blocks that stunted the Cavalier attack and as many aces to build their lead. Even though Montreat pulled back within a handful of points, Bryan utilized wins on key rallies in the set to go up 1-0 in the match behind a 25-15 score. The Lions ended the night with 11 aces.
The Cavs captured five of the first eight points of the second frame to take a 5-3 lead over the Lions. Kills by four different Cavaliers, including two of
Destini Phifer's five kills in the contest, gave Montreat a three-point edge; however, Bryan used an 8-1 stretch that forced a timeout from the visitors. The Lions extended the run to capture a 2-0 advantage with a 25-19 triumph.
Looking to stay alive in the third frame, the Cavs benefited from three early service errors from the home team that saw the set tied at five. A short 6-3 swing allowed BC (10-3, 6-0 AAC) to inch ahead in the final set, which turned out to be all the separation the Lions would need. Despite an attempt to slow Bryan, Montreat fell 25-17 in the frame.
Kamryn Wolf tallied three of her team-high seven kills in the last set, while
Taylor Coe and
Haley Horton each added five kills on the night.
"Bryan is a tough team and their offensive attack put our defense in a difficult spot tonight, which made it hard to get into our system. We'll make some adjustments and look forward to Saturday," said head coach
Haley Paonessa.
Volleyball now returns to McAlister Gymnasium on Saturday looking to defeat Union College. First serve is slated for 1:00 p.m.
