MONTREAT, N.C.— The Montreat volleyball team forced a fourth set in McAlister Gymnasium Saturday afternoon; however, the frame win was not enough for the home team as the Cavaliers dropped a 3-1 decision to the Union College Bulldogs.
The Cavaliers stayed level with the Bulldogs through a back-and-forth opening 30 points; however, Union ended the initial frame with a 10-4 stretch to take a 1-0 lead. Similarly, the second set saw the teams split the first 14 rallies before the visitors utilized a 7-2 run to propel themselves ahead of Montreat. Despite a team-high seven kills through two sets from
Kamryn Wolf, the Cavaliers trailed the Bulldogs 2-0 following a 25-17 second-set score.
In the third, the Cavs came alive thanks to defensive pressure that forced Union into errors. The Bulldogs committed seven attack miscues with only three kills as Montreat steamrolled UC in the frame. On the other side, the Cavaliers killed 10 attacks and had their best hitting percentage of the match (0.214) with their lowest amount of hitting errors. The perfect storm resulted in a dominant 25-11 victory for the Cavs, who stayed alive in the match.
As Montreat tried to extend the match again in the fourth set, the Cavaliers recorded a team-high 14 kills, including six by Wolf. Wolf, a freshman, paced the Cavs on the afternoon, recording an impressive career-high 15 kills in the match, but 10 attack mistakes by the home team allowed Union to close out the competition with a 25-20 result.
Reese Davis added a career-best 39 assists in the contest, while
Cambria Bowen contributed with 23 digs on the defensive side of play.
With the defeat, Montreat moved to 4-7 (0-5) on the season. Volleyball takes the court again on the road versus the Tennessee Wesleyan University Bulldogs on Tuesday. First serve is slated for 6:30 p.m.
