MONTREAT, N.C.— In the first home dual of Montreat wrestling's season, the Cavaliers dropped a decision to NCAA Division II Queens University of Charlotte Royals 28-10. The Cavs moved to 0-2 on the year following two defeats to NCAA institutions, despite an admirable fight on the morning.
 
Montreat began the contest in a 6-0 deficit after a pin at 125 but rebounded to cut its disadvantage to only three with a victory at 133. Braden Wharton, 2020-21 NAIA National Qualifier, battled his opposition well and earned a decision as the teams split the opening two bouts. Wharton is now 2-0 through two matches in the 2021-22 season.
 
A similar trend continued with the next two matches. After falling at 141, the Cavs answered with an exciting triumph in overtime thanks to Landon Chambers. Chambers responded for the home team and excited the crowd inside McAlister Gymnasium with a 6-4 victory on a takedown moments into the extra period.
 
Queens (1-3) led by a slim margin (9-6) through four bouts, but the Royals expanded their advantage over the ensuing four matchups. With a decision, two major decisions and a tech fall, the visitors jumped up 25-6.
 
Though the match was in hand, Seth Williamson claimed a win for the Cavaliers at 197. Williamson defeated his opponent handily, earning a nine-point victory to give Montreat 10 team points.
 
Wrestling now heads to the Georgia Open, hosted by Emmanuel College on Nov. 14. Matches are slated to start at 7:00 a.m. in Franklin Springs, Ga.
