MARIETTA, Ga.— Fifteen athletes from the Montreat College wrestling program competed at the Life University Open in Marietta, Ga. on Saturday. Four Cavaliers battled high-level competition in the open tournament, while the other 11 Cavaliers wrestled against a talented freshman/sophomore field.
 
Of the four Cavaliers who wrestled in the open tournament, three advanced to at least the quarterfinal round. Landon Chambers competed in the 149-lb weight class, and he started his day with three successive pins over opponents from Keiser, Xavier and Reinhardt. Chambers then used a 7-6 decision to propel himself into the semifinals. It was in the semifinal round where Chambers suffered his first defeat, a 4-3 decision against a wrestler from the host institution. Chambers bounced back with a 4-1 decision in the consolation semifinals and ultimately tied for third place.
 
Braden Wharton made a run to the quarterfinals in the 133-lb weight class after an opening round bye and a second-round pin (4:29). Wharton then dropped an 8-4 decision in the quarterfinals and a 14-3 major decision in the consolation bracket to end his day. Wrestling at 285, Jim Connaghan followed Wharton's lead and marched to the quarterfinals via a bye and second-round pin (2:24). Connaghan dropped his next two matches via pin to close out his day.
 
In the 165-lb weight class, Easton Griffin dropped a major decision (10-2) in his opening match before rebounding in his first consolation match with a pin (2:16). Griffin was eliminated in his second consolation bout via a 7-2 decision.
 
Louis Mehaffey, Tyler McDonald and Seth Williamson highlighted the Cavaliers' efforts in the freshman/sophomore tournament, as all three advanced to their respective quarterfinal rounds. Wrestling at 141, Mehaffey utilized a bye and a victory in a tiebreaker (4-2) to proceed into the quarterfinals. After being pinned in the quarterfinal round, Mehaffey registered a pin (3:42) of his own to stay alive one more round in the consolation bracket. Mehaffey dropped a 7-4 decision in his final consolation match.
 
McDonald also had a bye in the 174-lb weight class before winning a major decision (15-4) to enter the quarterfinals. After a 20-7 major decision defeat in the quarterfinals, McDonald bowed out of the tournament via pin (1:35) in the fourth round of consolation matches.
 
After an opening-round bye in the 197-lb weight class, Williamson's following four bouts all finished with a pin. Williamson pinned his second-round opponent in 2:51 before dropping his quarterfinal match in 1:05. It only took Williamson 1:33 to pin his opponent in the fourth round of the consolation bracket before ultimately being defeated in the consolation bracket's fifth round.
 
The Cavaliers' eight remaining athletes went on to win 10 total bouts in the freshman/sophomore tournament at Life University, highlighted by Alec Baynard's fifth-place finish at 174. You can see a list of Montreat's results here.
 
Montreat wrestling returns to the mat on Dec. 4 for dual action at St. Thomas University. Matches are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
