BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— The Montreat women's soccer team scored two late second-half goals to defeat Tennessee Wesleyan, 2-1, completing their second come-from-behind conference victory of the week. With the win, the Cavaliers improved to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.
Tennessee Wesleyan (5-3-1, 2-2-1 AAC) was the only side that managed to put a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes of play.
Payton Landy made two saves, one in the sixth minute and another in the 33
rd, to keep the Bulldogs off the board. Montreat's first shot on target didn't come until a long-range
Jackie Montes strike in the 52
nd minute.
In the 61
st minute, Tennessee Wesleyan broke through. Jamie York fired a cross into the box from the left flank to the feet of Krista Eik Hardardottir, who laid a pass off to Jill De Waal. De Waal fired a shot off the crossbar and over the goal line, breaking the deadlock and putting the Bulldogs up, 1-0.
Montreat needed to find an equalizer, and for 15 minutes, it couldn't find that elusive goal. That changed in the 78
th minute when Montes blasted a shot from outside the box toward goalkeeper Laia Roch Font. Falling to her left, Roch Font made the initial save but couldn't control the rebound.
Zoe Frenier raced through the box and crashed the net, stabbing home the rebound to tie the match at one.
With momentum on its side, the Cavaliers went from searching for an equalizer to pushing for a game-winner. Frenier came through in a big spot again in the 84
th minute.
Isabel Aguilar laid off a pass on the right flank for
Kaitlyn Adams. Racing down the sideline, Adams sent a cross into the box beyond the Tennessee Wesleyan defense. Frenier was there waiting at the far post. She controlled the ball and directed a shot with her right foot that slammed off the inside of the right post and into the netting. Frenier's brace ensured the Cavs' second come-from-behind victory of the week, the third-straight 2-1 win and the sixth consecutive win this season.
"It was a fantastic team performance," said head coach
Kristin Eggert. "We executed tactically what we were asking for on both sides of the ball."
Montreat women's soccer returns to the pitch on Wednesday for an AAC showdown against Kentucky Christian University. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. in Black Mountain, N.C.
