BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— In a match against the visiting Kentucky Christian University Knights Wednesday afternoon, the Montreat women's soccer team defeated KCU by a score of 2-1 at Pulliam Stadium to notch its seventh consecutive triumph. With the victory, the Cavaliers moved to 8-1 overall and 7-1 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) competition.
Surprisingly and against the run of play, KCU (0-11, 0-7 AAC) got on the scoreboard first on the rainy day thanks to a tally in just the sixth minute. A skipping punt from the Kentucky Christian goalkeeper made its way through the Montreat defense and found the run of the Knights' forward, who slotted the ball past
Payton Landy to break the deadlock.
Following the lapse, the Cavaliers recovered, as they have done in each of the past three contests. Fighting from a goal down, Montreat pressured the Knights on a nearly-unplayable turf surface. In the 23
rd minute,
Annika Comendador linked up with
Jackie Montes in the midfield. Montes took a touch to her favored left foot and struck a ball across her body and along the ground that ricocheted off the inside of the near post and into the net. Montes captains the team with 10 goals on the season so far.
At the half, the teams were level on the scoreboard; however, Montreat had the better of the quality chances, outshooting the Knights 12-4 overall and 6-2 on target.
As the home team continued to pressure KCU in the second period looking for a winner, the Cavaliers hit the woodwork twice within a span of 47 seconds. First,
Sydney Jordan launched a long-distance effort that glanced off the crossbar in the 57
th minute. Then, in the 58
th,
Isabel Aguilar nearly found a game-winner as she rocketed a ball off the outside of the right post.
The Cavaliers utilized the momentum to eventually put home their second goal. With only 6:09 remaining in regulation, the Cavs earned a free kick from about 35 yards out. Aguilar made the most of the opportunity, lofting a ball over the outstretched hands of the KCU keeper and just under the crossbar to give Montreat its lead.
With the free-kick goal, Aguilar secured the Cavs' seventh straight triumph and the third consecutive 2-1 comeback victory for the team. Overall, Montreat outshot their opposition heavily, 23-7 on the afternoon, placing 10 shots on frame to KCU's mere two.
"We are looking to be a program that is no longer satisfied simply with winning, but to constantly push ourselves to be better," started head coach
Kristin Eggert. She continued, "We did not meet our objectives for the match and cannot be satisfied with today's performance."
Women's soccer now travels to Bluefield University for a matchup with the Rams next Wednesday. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 p.m. in Bluefield, Va.
