Scott Mattera enters his first season as the assistant volleyball coach at
Montreat. Coach Mattera comes to the mountains by way of Toledo, Ohio
where he was most recently on staff at The University of Toledo for the 2010
season. During his one season there, the Lady Rockets upset the University
of Michigan and took out the number #1 seeded Ball State Cardinal in the MAC
tournament.
Scott's biggest coaching accolades come from the high school ranks. He
began his career at state powerhouse St. Ursula Academy as the JV
coach. In 2 years there he compiled a record of 44-3, wining city
championships both years. After taking a year off to start Synergy Sports
and Fitness, a 60,000 square foot volleyball and fitness facility in Toledo,
Scott returned to high school coaching as the head coach at Notre Dame
Academy. In just his 2nd year with the program the perennial
middle of the pack city league program knocked off Toledo St. Ursula, ending
their 139 match winning streak. NDA won back to back city championships in
2007 and 2008 and won the district in 2007, the first in school
history. Mattera was awarded the City League and District Coach of the
Year in 2006 & 2007, and his teams were consistently ranked both in state
and national polls. During his time at NDA, his program produced five D1
college athletes in addition to numerous other D2, D3, NAIA, and NJCAA
recruits.
Coach Mattera earned his bachelor's degree in finance from the University of
Toledo, graduating with honors while also playing for and eventually coaching
the men's volleyball team. He is currently working towards a master's
degree with much of his work focusing on the sports sociology with hopes of
teaching and writing on the subject in addition to coaching.
Volleyball and coaching are not only career choices but lifestyles for
Scott. He was on the board of trustees for the Ohio High School Volleyball
Coaches Association, is active in the American Volleyball Coaches Association,
and is CAP II certified through USA Volleyball. He has attended the high
performance coaching clinic at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs,
has been the featured speaker at numerous junior high and high school clinics,
and has had two articles published by the national website
"prepvolleyball.com" on volleyball coaching techniques and theories.
