SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Montreat College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Spartanburg Methodist College on Saturday afternoon in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup. The Cavaliers put nine of their 10 shots on target and made seven saves in the second half but could not find the back of the net. With the result, the Cavs moved to 0-4-0 (0-3-0 AAC) on the season, while SMC improved to 4-1-1 (3-0-0 AAC).
Natalie Hall and Rebeca Cruz Manon each tested the opposing goalkeeper within the opening eight minutes, as the Cavaliers generated the first sustained offensive pressure of the contest. Montreat then weathered a push from the Pioneers that featured two corner kicks, a blocked shot and a high attempt. The Cavs continued to apply pressure following a corner at the 22:49 mark, forcing saves on attempts from Maddie Ellis, Olivia Scott, Leigh Harpel and Maggie Hypes. In the end, though, both squads entered halftime tied at 0-0.
In the second half, Anna Weissenfluh made several saves as Spartanburg Methodist generated three corner kicks during an early stretch. Kelsey Wiggins created an opportunity for Montreat at the 50:44 mark, forcing a save from the Pioneers' goalkeeper. The Cavaliers continued to press in the 69th and 70th minutes, with Eden Perkinson and Harpel each placing a shot on target.
Weissenfluh made two more saves as SMC surged forward between the 77th and 80th minutes. The Pioneers eventually broke through with just 7:51 remaining, however, finding the back of the net to seize a late 1-0 lead. Montreat was unable to answer as the final minutes featured several cautions, leaving the visitors with the 1-0 setback.
Statistically, the Cavaliers came away with more shots on goal, 9-8, compared to the Pioneers. The home team led the way in all other categories, including shots (16-10), saves (9-7) and corner kicks (7-1). The Cavs were whistled for five fouls on the day, while the hosts were called for six.
Weissenfluh finished with seven saves across 90 minutes in goal. Harpel led Montreat with two shots, both of which were on target. Cruz Manon also recorded two attempts, including one on frame. Wiggins, Scott, Hall, Ellis and Hypes each added one shot, with every attempt finding the target.
"Character is tested in the midst of adversity," said Head Coach Kristin Eggert. "I'm proud of the caliber of women on this team, and I believe the soccer is still to come."
The Cavs return home on Wednesday, Sept. 23, welcoming Columbia International University to Pulliam Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Black Mountain, N.C.
