SWANNANOA, N.C. — The Montreat College men's tennis team dropped a narrow 4-3 team dual match against Mars Hill University, an NCAA Division II program, on Thursday. With the result at Asheville Christian Academy in Swannanoa, N.C., the Cavaliers moved to 6-12 on the year, while the Lions improved to 8-12 overall.
MHU grabbed the doubles point thanks to victories on the top two courts. In the opening pairing,
Julian Stolevski and
Paul Saemann were unable to secure a game against their opposition.
Fabrizio Moreno and
Vitor Monteiro won four games in the second flight, but they too suffered defeat.
Lucas Descalzi and
Joaquin Hernandez were the lone triumphant doubles tandem for the Cavs, seizing a 6-4 victory at No. 3.
The two sides split the six singles matches, resulting in the Lions' 4-3 team win.
Monteiro and Descalzi kept the hosts in the match with straight-sets triumphs on the second and third courts. The former utilized a pair of 6-2 frames to capture a win at No. 2, while the latter seized 11 consecutive games after trailing early to win 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3. While the team dual outcome was determined prior to Moreno's victory, the Miami native still delivered an impressive 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 triumph in the fifth flight.
Both Hernandez and
Ben Smith registered 6-0, 6-0 losses on the first and fourth courts, respectively. Stolevski battled valiantly at No. 6 but ultimately came up just short, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
The Montreat College men's tennis team wraps up its 2026 regular season slate on Saturday, April 18, when it takes on Methodist University at Asheville Christian Academy in Swannanoa, N.C.
