SWANNANOA, N.C. — The Montreat College men's tennis team closed out Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play in strong fashion on Friday afternoon, earning a 6-1 victory over Columbia College. The Cavaliers claimed five of the six singles matches and secured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. With the result, Montreat improved to 6-11 (3-4 AAC), while the Koalas dropped to 6-7 (1-6 AAC) on the season.
The Cavs captured the doubles point with convincing victories in flights two and three. Lucas Descalzi and Vitor Monteiro controlled play at No. 2, cruising to a 6-1 win. At position three, Youssef Idboufous and Fabrizio Moreno delivered the clincher with a 7-5 decision. On the top court, Julian Stolevski and Paul Saemann battled in a tight matchup, falling just short via a 7-6 (7-5) result.
In singles action, Montreat carried its momentum into a dominant showing. Monteiro quickly earned a point on court two with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Descalzi followed at No. 3 with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 win, while Moreno added another point at flight four with a 6-0, 6-2 decision. Idboufous sealed the match for the Cavs at position five, delivering a flawless 6-0, 6-0 performance.
With the outcome already secured, Joaquin Hernandez turned in an impressive effort on the top court, rallying for a three-set win, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-5). Saemann competed on court six but fell in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
Up next, Montreat remains home to face Mars Hill University on Thursday, April 9. The team dual match is slated to take place at Asheville Christian Academy in Swannanoa, N.C.
