LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The Montreat College baseball team dropped the opening contest of a three-game series against No. 2-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College on Friday evening, falling 7-0 to the Grizzlies. The Cavaliers were limited to just one hit in the matchup. With the loss, Montreat moved to 20-7 on the season, while GGC improved to 22-2 overall.
Both teams struggled to generate offense early, as the game remained scoreless through the first three innings of play. The Cavs managed to load the bases with no outs in the top of the third, but a shallow flyout and a double play kept the visitors off the board.
Georgia Gwinnett broke through in the fourth frame, scoring the game's initial runs. Back-to-back singles put two runners on before a balk moved both into scoring position, setting up a two-RBI single to hand the Grizzlies the lead. A wild pitch and an RBI double brought in two additional runs, and a sacrifice fly capped the inning as GGC built a 5-0 advantage.
In the seventh frame, the hosts added to their lead. A runner reached third following a flyout, and a passed ball brought him home moments later. Another run crossed the plate thanks to a single, extending the Grizzlies' edge to 7-0.
Georgia Gwinnett controlled the remainder of the game, keeping Montreat off the scoreboard as the Cavaliers were unable to find much of an offensive rhythm. GGC ultimately closed out the contest with a 7-0 victory.
Bryton Williams got the start for the Cavs, working four frames while surrendering five runs on seven hits. He recorded four strikeouts and issued just one walk. Ethan Caldwell provided a solid outing in relief, tossing 2 2/3 innings and limiting the Grizzlies to one hit and one earned run. Isaiah Pappas allowed two hits in 1/3 inning of work. Rhett Yurko finished the game on the mound, delivering a clean eighth inning with two strikeouts.
Cameron Nagel recorded a hit and swiped a base, while Daniel Restrepo also contributed on the basepaths with a stolen bag. Jason Brulport reached twice via a pair of walks. The Cavaliers totaled five walks and three HBPs in the effort.
Montreat aims to bounce back tomorrow as the Cavs wrap up the three-game set in Georgia with a doubleheader against the Grizzlies. First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Gwinnett Field in Lawrenceville, Ga.
