Women’s lacrosse loses nonconference finale at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Montreat College women's lacrosse team wrapped up its 2026 nonconference slate on Wednesday afternoon against the Guilford College Quakers. Playing with only 10 student-athletes, the Cavaliers suffered a 27-1 defeat to the NCAA Division III program. After the matchup, both squads saw their records move to 3-3 on the season.

Guilford scored early and often, depositing nine shots into the back of the net in both the first and third quarters. The Quakers registered six consecutive strikes to open the matchup, seizing a 6-0 lead after 5:28 had elapsed. Madisen Green assisted Ruthann Stout, who notched her 13th goal of the campaign, at the 7:52 mark. That score proved to be the visitors' lone goal of the day, however. GC rattled off three more tallies before the first period drew to a close.

Anastasia Rust played all 60 minutes in net for the Cavs. She delivered a trio of saves in the second frame, all of which occurred during the initial half of the quarter. Her efforts slowed the Quakers for awhile, but the hosts eventually turned their extended pressure into offensive production. Three more goals enabled Guilford to enter halftime with a 12-1 advantage.

Anna White won the opening draw control of the third quarter, but without putting a shot on target, the possession ultimately resulted in a clock violation and a turnover. Meanwhile, the hosts pieced together arguably their best 15-minute stretch of the day. GC outscored its counterpart 9-0 in the third, and by the period's conclusion, its lead had expanded to 21-1.

Rust achieved the lone save of the fourth quarter for either side, but the Quakers still managed to tack on six more goals across the final 15 minutes. Playing shorthanded throughout, the Cavaliers eventually lost a 27-1 final in Greensboro, N.C.

Statistically, Guilford ended the game with more shots (39-7), clears (20-5), ground balls (21-10), draw controls (20-10) and free-position goals (4-0). The Quakers also committed 14 fewer turnovers (22-8), while the Cavs totaled four more saves (5-1).

Stout scored the sole goal for Montreat, converting one of her five shots. The Hickory, N.C. native also captured her team's only two attempts on frame. Green contributed offensively with her first career assist. Defensively, Rust made a total of five saves in the defeat.

Up next, the Montreat College women's lacrosse team hosts Truett McConnell University for the start of Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play on Saturday, March 14. Senior day festivities take place prior to the contest, while the opening draw control is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Pulliam Stadium in Black Mountain, N.C.
