Men’s tennis suffers defeat against No. 2-ranked Bulldogs

ATHENS, Tenn.— The Montreat College men's tennis team went on the road on Wednesday for a tough Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup against the No. 2-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan University Bulldogs. Despite a strong effort from the Cavaliers, they ultimately dropped the match to the Bulldogs by a score of 7-0. As a result of the contest, the Cavs now hold a 3-7 record (1-1 AAC), while TWU sits at 7-2 (2-0 AAC) on the year.
 
The visitors fell behind early, as all three doubles matches concluded with losses. On court No. 1, the pair of Joaquin Hernandez and Paul Saemann faced off against the No. 10-ranked doubles tandem in the NAIA, falling with a final score of 6-1. Lucas Descalzi and Vitor Monteiro ended their match on court two with a 6-2 result. Youssef Idboufous and Fabrizio Moreno wrapped up the third flight with a final of 6-1.
 
In singles play, the Cavaliers faced challenging matches across the board. Monteiro competed against the No. 18-ranked singles player on court one. The freshman was able to pick up nine games but fell in two sets, 7-5 and 6-4. Descalzi had the strongest performance for the Cavs on the second court, taking the match to three sets after picking up a win 6-3. Descalzi won 13 games in total but lost the other two sets, 6-3 and 6-4. Idboufous and Saemann each claimed five games in their respective matches. Moreno tallied just one game at No. 4, and Hernandez rounded it out with four games in the fifth flight.
 
Looking ahead, Montreat is set to compete against King University on Tuesday, March 3, with doubles play starting at 1 p.m. in Bristol, Tenn.
