KANSAS CITY, Mo.— Just one day after capturing the first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Offensive Player of the Week honor of her career, Montreat College's
Grace Wiegand added more hardware to her trophy case. According to a release from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) on Tuesday, Wiegand is the first NAIA Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week in program history.
While the Cavaliers have had student-athletes tabbed as the national player of the week by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), Wiegand becomes the first to officially garner that level of recognition from the NAIA directly.
Last week, Wiegand made NAIA history during a 24-17 home victory versus the Warren Wilson College Owls. The senior midfielder tallied 14 goals in the win, breaking the previous regular season single-game record by three. Along with the national record, Wiegand also set the Montreat College women's lacrosse single-game record for points with 18 thanks to the addition of four assists. Just two days later, Wiegand helped run the Cavs' winning streak to three with a 10-goal performance in a 19-7 triumph at Brevard College.
Overall, the Fayetteville, N.C. native scored 24 goals last week, while also dishing out four assists, registering 28 points and placing 30 of her 36 shot attempts on target. Wiegand went a perfect 6-for-6 on free position shots, and she also totaled 14 draw controls, seven ground balls and two caused turnovers.
