COLUMBIA, S.C. — Montreat's women's soccer squad traveled to the state capital of South Carolina on Wednesday evening to battle the Columbia International University Rams in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup. CIU defended their home field, outlasting the Cavaliers with a 2-1 triumph. With the defeat, Montreat moves to 2-4-0 overall and 2-2-0 in conference play. The Rams improved to 5-1-1 and 3-0-1 in AAC play.
Both teams needed time to settle into the contest. Montreat attempted three shots in the first 20 minutes of play, one of them on frame courtesy of
Natalie Hall. Despite the early attacking surge, Montreat was unable to break through CIU's defense. Both teams entered halftime scoreless.
The Cavs would not get a shot off or a corner kick for the rest of the half. The Rams took six shots and were awarded one corner kick during the period. Montreat was whistled for three fouls while CIU was called for two.
After the intermission, CIU got on the scoresheet early with a goal in the 49
th minute. Columbia International doubled its lead in the 77
th minute, surging ahead 2-0. The Cavs responded immediately, highlighted by
Sam Aalbue scoring in the 78
th minute. She found the net on a header thanks to a long set-piece cross from
Maddie Ellis, cutting the deficit to one goal. Montreat fought hard but ran out of time to equalize and lost the match 2-1.
Aalbue scored the one goal for Montreat, contributing with three total shots. The scoring effort was her sixth of the year. She leads the Cavaliers in that category and has scored five goals in her last three games. Hall and
Katie Burton were also credited with a shot attempt. Ellis provided the assist, marking her third of the year. In goal,
Anna Weissenfluh made four saves, two in each half. She faced six shots throughout the match.
Altogether, Montreat took seven shots with four on target while the hosts attempted 13 shots with six on goal. Montreat was awarded two corner kicks to CIU's three. The Cavs were called on four fouls, and the Rams were called for eight.
In their next match, the Cavaliers will travel to Advance, N.C., to play against Carolina University on Sept. 23. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m.
