BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— The Montreat College men's soccer team hosted the Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneers at Pulliam Stadium in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers beat the Cavaliers 3-1 in an intense game with plenty of emotion. With the defeat, Montreat now holds a record of 0-6-1 and is 0-2-1 in conference play. Spartanburg Methodist stands at 1-3-1 overall with a 1-1-1 record in AAC action.
The first half began with high intensity, which foreshadowed what was to come. SMC managed to break through in the 22
nd minute, scoring the half's only goal.
Sako Mo placed the only shot on target for Montreat in the frame, and the Cavaliers trailed 1-0 at the break.
Frankie Zavala made three saves in the period.
Montreat leveled the score in the early going of the second half.
Alejandro Hernandez found the back of the net in the 48
th minute, marking his first goal of the season. The Cavs picked up the pace with 12 shots in the frame, but only one other attempt from
Emilio Ruiz landed on target. Spartanburg Methodist regained the lead in the 70
th minute and sealed its three points with another tally in the 84
th minute. Montreat fought hard in the final stretch, but the game concluded with a 3-1 victory for the Pioneers.
Hernandez scored the lone goal for the Cavs, converting his only shot on target.
Emmanuel Ntimeh led the team with four shots.
Drake Fowler took three shots and
Ethan Grasso had two in the contest.
Predrag Grbovic and
Andres Saborio also registered shot attempts in the game. Zavala finished with five saves throughout the match, facing eight shots on target from the opposition.
Collectively, Montreat took 14 shots with three on target, while Spartanburg Methodist took 20 shots with eight on frame. Both teams combined for 40 fouls called and 10 yellow cards produced. SMC was awarded more corner kicks than the Cavs throughout the match (7-4).
"After a promising performance on Wednesday, we reverted back to what we don't want to see," said head coach
Michael Bruce. "We need to make sure we show up with the same intensity for every game. When we do, we can compete with the best teams, but when we don't, we really struggle. Hopefully, we can fix our mentality and get back on track this Wednesday at CIU."
In their next game, Montreat will travel to Columbia, S.C. to face Columbia International University on Sept. 17. The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
