Women’s tennis drops first team match of campaign

SPARTANBURG, S.C.— The Montreat College women's tennis squad visited the Converse University Valkyries for a team dual match on Friday afternoon. The match marked the first countable contest towards individual statistics and records for the year. The Cavaliers lost the match by a score of 3-2. Montreat's team record dropped to 0-1 with the defeat.

In doubles play, Chiharu Ito and Clara Roman teamed up. They won their matchup, 6-3. Montreat went on to claim the doubles point as Ana Marija Horvacki and Yamile Cuiza triumphed in their pairing, 6-1.

When it came to singles action, the Cavaliers could not capitalize on their one-point advantage. Ito was the only Cav to win her match. She secured the victory in two sets by a score of 6-3, 6-4. Cuiza fell in her match, 6-3, 6-3. Both Horvacki and Kathryn Salazar were swept in two scoreless sets, 6-0, 6-0. With the singles losses, Montreat gave Converse its three points, which were enough to snatch the win.

Ito led the way for the Cavaliers with 18 games won. Cuiza ended her day with 12 wins. Roman and Horvacki each finished with six, and Salazar concluded winless.

Next on the schedule for the Cavaliers is the ITA NAIA South Regional Championships in Lawrenceville, Ga. The event will run from Sept. 18 through Sept. 21.
