Cavaliers finish nationals prep by adding two last chance meets

HICKORY, N.C.— The Montreat men's and women's track & field teams added a pair of last chance meets to their schedules this weekend, sending one athlete to Lee University and four competitors to Lenoir-Rhyne University. With six total events across Saturday and Sunday, the Cavaliers notched one national standard and a pair of top-20 NAIA results.

Ali Ray made her return from injury and shined Saturday evening at the Lee University Last Chance Meet. Running in the women's 10k, Ray utilized a personal-best time of 36:46.46 to place fourth among a 12-competitor field. The Brownsburg, Ind. native's showing comfortably met the NAIA 'B' standard, and it currently stands as the 17th-fastest mark in the NAIA this season.

Montreat's five other events took place at the LR Last Chance & Multis Meet in Hickory, N.C. The Cavs tied for 20th on the men's side and ended 15th on the women's side.

Emma Barnes was the lone female Cavalier participating at Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday and Sunday. The junior finished fourth in the women's heptathlon, doing so with a season-high 4,286 points. Of the seven events, Barnes claimed the shot put with a mark of 11.36m. Overall, Barnes' heptathlon total ranks 19th in the association.

On the men's side, Drew Bryant also took a shot at the multis competition. While Bryant didn't finish all 10 men's decathlon events, he still racked up the sixth-most points among the 10 athletes in attendance. The Candler, N.C. native won the high jump at 1.83m, and he totaled 4,346 points across eight attempted events.

Cameron Rice and Kaleel Stevenson combined to sprint in a trio of races on Saturday at Lenoir-Rhyne. The former placed 12th of 15 in the men's 100m prelims with his 11.02-second time, as well as seventh out of 11 sprinters with a 22.16-second 200m dash. Meanwhile, Stevenson registered a personal-best time of 23.05 seconds in the 200m, good for ninth. He also needed 51.30 seconds to complete his 400m, leaving him eighth overall in the event.
