WALESKA, Ga.— The Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) shared its weekly award winners late Monday morning, and Montreat College's
Heather Murphy landed among the recipients. For the first time in her Cavalier career, Murphy garnered recognition as the AAC Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week. This marks the second conference weekly award for the Montreat women's track & field team this outdoor season.
Following her historic, record-setting 10k performance at the Raleigh Relays in late March, Murphy picked up right where she left off last week at the Electric City Invitational in Anderson, S.C.
The Portarlington, Ireland native participated in the 5000m invite on Friday, forever changing the Montreat record books. Murphy needed just 16:43.26 to finish her race, good for first among a 17-runner field. Her time not only met the NAIA 'A' standard, but it also demolished the program's previous-best 5k by over 50 seconds. Murphy's showing currently stands as the third-fastest in the NAIA this season.
Murphy and the Cavs set their sights on setting additional records and standards this Friday and Saturday during the Asheville Bulldog Invite in Asheville, N.C.
